-
Online scams have become a global crisis, reaching an unprecedented level of sophistication. No longer the work of isolated individuals, today’s scammers operate in organized, industrial-scale networks, leveraging AI and deepfake technology to constantly evolve their tactics. With losses amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars each year and rapidly increasing, scams have infiltrated everyday life, affecting as many as 7 out of 10 people. This creates a digital environment filled with risk and uncertainty, where anyone can become a target
-
Scammers follow the platforms people use every day, multiple times a day. From checking email in the morning, answering phone calls during work, to scrolling social media and messaging apps throughout the day, these frequent habits create constant opportunities for scams to appear.
Email (43%) and phone calls (28%) remain the most common channels, while online advertisements account for around 22% of shopping scams. Widely used platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Gmail are frequently targeted, with social media becoming the leading starting point for investment and romance scams. The more often these channels are used, the more often people are exposed - making it difficult to stay consistently protected without awareness.
-
When you think you’re most protected, you can be most vulnerable. A man in Singapore believed he had found a safe and credible investment opportunity, one that looked legitimate and well-structured. The scammers built trust gradually, making everything feel controlled and secure. Confident in his decision, he handed over $50,000 in cash to a man posing as an investment representative, only to discover too late that it was all a scam.
In a moment where he felt certain, he lost not only his money, but also his sense of security, highlighting how easily trust can be exploited and how devastating the consequences can be.
